FORTIFIED Roofing Near You With Sealed Roof Decks, Ring Shank Deck Nailing, Locked-Down Edges and Wind-Rated Shingles for Hurricane Season

Collins Roofing and Repair Builds Your Next Roof to the IBHS FORTIFIED Standard So It Stays Put When the Wind Hits

Collins Roofing and Repair builds FORTIFIED roofs at replacement: sealed deck, ring shank nails, locked-down edges and wind-rated shingles, all photographed before they're covered. Free inspection, written estimate, no pressure.

Most roofs fail at the edges first. Wind gets under the drip edge, peels the shingles, and rain pours through the open seams in the deck. A FORTIFIED roof is built to stop that chain before it starts.

How to Choose a FORTIFIED Roofing Company Near You That Gets Every Detail on Camera

A FORTIFIED roof only counts if an independent evaluator can verify it. Your roofer has to build to the standard and photograph each stage before it gets covered. Collins Roofing and Repair already photographs every job, before and after.

Three Questions to Ask Before You Hire

Ask every FORTIFIED roofing contractor near you these three questions. Here's how Collins Roofing and Repair answers.

  1. Do You Build to the Current FORTIFIED Standard?

IBHS updated the FORTIFIED Home standard for 2025, with new technical resources in effect November 1, 2025. Deck nailing, edge details and approved products changed. A roofer working from an old checklist can cost you the designation.

How Collins Roofing and Repair Answers

We build to the current standard's details: deck attachment, sealed seams, edge metal and starter strip, and rated shingles and vents. Your estimate lists each FORTIFIED item line by line so you can check it.

    Licensed and Insured

Collins Roofing and Repair is a licensed and insured South Carolina roofing contractor, and we hand over documentation before work begins.

  2. Who Photographs the Work Before It Gets Covered?

Ring shank nails and seam tape disappear under underlayment within hours. Missing photos are one of the easiest ways to lose a FORTIFIED designation.

How Collins Roofing and Repair Answers

Our team photographs tear-off, deck repairs, nailing, seam sealing, edges and shingles as the work goes in. Taking photos is how Collins Roofing and Repair runs every roof, not an extra step.

  3. What Happens If You Find Bad Decking Under My Old Roof?

Nobody knows the deck's condition until the shingles come off. Rotten or thin sheathing has to be replaced before it can be sealed and nailed to the FORTIFIED pattern.

How Collins Roofing and Repair Answers

We show you what the crew found, with photos, and price any decking before work continues. No shortcuts on the deck.

Red Flags on a FORTIFIED Roof Bid

  • "FORTIFIED-style" or "hurricane-ready" roofs with no evaluator and no certificate.
  • No line items for deck nailing, seam sealing and edge metal.
  • No plan for photos at each stage.
  • Pressure to sign today to grab a grant or a price.

What Makes a Roof FORTIFIED

A FORTIFIED roof is a roof built to the FORTIFIED Home standard from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) and verified by an independent evaluator. Collins Roofing and Repair builds the roof. The evaluator checks the work and IBHS issues the homeowner a certificate.

The Sealed Roof Deck

A sealed roof deck keeps rain out of your attic even if wind strips the shingles off. IBHS testing shows sealing the deck seams can cut water intrusion by up to 95 percent. The standard accepts a few ways to do it.

Approved Sealing Methods

  • Self-adhered tape at least about 4 inches wide over every sheathing joint, then underlayment over the whole deck.
  • Two layers of underlayment, with horizontal seams lapped 19 inches and vertical seams 6 inches.
  • A full self-adhered membrane covering the entire deck.

Ring Shank Nails in a Tight Pattern

Ring shank nails have ridges that grip the wood like a screw. IBHS says they can double the roof deck's resistance to uplift compared with smooth nails. The 2025 standard calls for ring shank nails at a maximum of 4 inches apart along every rafter or truss.

Locked-Down Edges

Edges take the hardest wind loads on any roof. A FORTIFIED roof uses new drip edge that reaches at least 2 inches onto the deck, overlaps 3 inches at joints and is fastened every 4 inches or closer.

A self-adhering starter strip at the eave seals the drip edge, underlayment and first course of shingles together.

Wind-Rated Shingles and Vents

Asphalt shingles on a FORTIFIED roof must carry one of the top wind ratings: ASTM D3161 Class F or ASTM D7158 Class H. Metal and low-slope systems need tested ratings for the home's design pressures. Attic vents must resist wind and rain.

The Evaluator and Your Certificate

A FORTIFIED Evaluator is an independent, trained third party who documents and verifies the build. The evaluator is separate from the roofer and has a separate fee. Once approved, your FORTIFIED certificate is valid for five years.

Standard Roof vs. FORTIFIED Roof Side by Side

A standard roof is built to code minimums. A FORTIFIED roof adds specific upgrades at the deck and the edges, where hurricanes do the most damage. Here's how a typical Collins Roofing and Repair replacement compares when you upgrade to FORTIFIED.

Component by component: what a standard roof replacement includes and what a FORTIFIED roof adds
Component Standard Roof Replacement FORTIFIED Roof
Deck nails Smooth shank nails are common Ring shank nails, 4 inches apart or closer on every framing member
Deck seams Underlayment only Sealed with tape, double-lapped underlayment or a full membrane
Drip edge Often reused or standard width New drip edge, 2 inches or more onto the deck, fastened every 4 inches
Starter strip Standard starter Self-adhering starter strip sealing the eave
Shingle rating Varies by product ASTM D3161 Class F or ASTM D7158 Class H
Attic vents Standard vents Wind and rain resistant vents
Verification Contractor only Independent FORTIFIED Evaluator with stage photos
Proof for your file Contractor invoice FORTIFIED certificate, valid five years

FORTIFIED Roof vs. Silver vs. Gold

FORTIFIED has three levels, and each one builds on the one before it. FORTIFIED Roof is the first level and the one Collins Roofing and Repair builds. Silver and Gold reinforce the rest of the house.

  1. FORTIFIED Roof Built by Collins Roofing and Repair

Sealed roof deck, ring shank deck nails, locked-down edges, wind-rated shingles, wind and rain resistant vents.

  2. FORTIFIED Silver Builds on FORTIFIED Roof

Opening protection, gable end bracing, anchored porches and carports, chimney bracing.

  3. FORTIFIED Gold Builds on FORTIFIED Silver

A continuous load path that ties the roof to the walls and the walls to the foundation.

The three FORTIFIED levels, what each one covers and the level it builds on
Level What It Covers Builds On
FORTIFIED Roof Sealed roof deck, ring shank deck nails, locked-down edges, wind-rated shingles, wind and rain resistant vents Your roof replacement
FORTIFIED Silver Opening protection, gable end bracing, anchored porches and carports, chimney bracing FORTIFIED Roof
FORTIFIED Gold A continuous load path that ties the roof to the walls and the walls to the foundation FORTIFIED Silver

Start With the Roof

The roof is where wind and water get in first, which is why it's the first level. Every Silver and Gold home starts with a FORTIFIED Roof designation.

Why a FORTIFIED Roof Matters for Hurricane Exposure on Our Coast

Hurricane exposure is the reason FORTIFIED exists. Horry and Georgetown county homes have seen the same failure over and over: shingles lift at the edges, the deck opens up, and water does the real damage inside. Collins Roofing and Repair builds FORTIFIED roofs to break that chain.

Recent Hurricanes and the Wind They Brought

Named storms and the wind, surge and damage recorded across our service area
Storm Date What Was Recorded Here
Ian Sep 30, 2022 Landfall near Georgetown as a Category 1. Gusts of 84 mph at Winyah Bay, 68 mph in Murrells Inlet and 61 mph at Springmaid Pier and Cherry Grove. Over 60,000 Horry County outages.
Dorian Sep 5, 2019 63 mph gust in Myrtle Beach and 61 mph in North Myrtle Beach. An EF1 tornado in Little River damaged roofs.
Isaias Aug 3, 2020 Landfall just over the state line at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. 70 mph gust at Crescent Beach and a tornado in Garden City.
Matthew Oct 8, 2016 The center crossed directly over Myrtle Beach with hurricane-force gusts on the Grand Strand.
Hugo Sep 22, 1989 Category 4 landfall to the south. A 13 foot surge in Garden City and Surfside Beach.

How Hurricanes Break a Standard Roof

The Failure Chain

  1. Edges lift first.

Wind catches the drip edge and starter course.

  2. Shingles peel back.

One lifted course exposes the next.

  3. Sheathing pulls loose.

Smooth nails let panels pop off under suction.

  4. Rain floods the attic.

Open seams let water soak insulation and ceilings.

A FORTIFIED roof breaks that chain at every step, and the sealed seams keep water out even if shingles go.

Beach Homes and Inland Homes Both Benefit

Beachfront homes face open-water wind and salt air. Inland homes still see tropical storm gusts, thunderstorm wind and falling pines.

In 2026 alone, the National Weather Service logged 23 wind reports across Horry County through early September, including a 65 mph gust in Forestbrook on July 11.

SC Safe Home Grants and FORTIFIED Roofs in 2026

SC Safe Home is a South Carolina Department of Insurance program that gives grants to eligible homeowners to make their homes stronger against hurricanes. Its roof grants pair with the IBHS FORTIFIED Roof program, so one roof can earn both designations. Collins Roofing and Repair can walk you through what a qualifying roof needs.

2026 SC Safe Home Grant Amounts

2026 SC Safe Home grant amounts by project type, for non-matching and matching grants
Project Type Non-Matching Grant Matching Grant
Resilient Mitigation: roof built to SC Safe Home and IBHS FORTIFIED Roof standards Up to $7,500 Up to $6,000
Sustainable Mitigation: roof built to SC Safe Home standards, or opening protection Up to $5,000 Up to $4,000
Hurricane shutters or protective barriers Up to $3,000 Up to $3,000

Non-matching grants are for households under the program's income limits. Matching grants have no income limit, but the homeowner matches the grant dollar for dollar. You pay any cost above the grant.

Who Qualifies

  • The home is in a designated coastal county. The 2026 round covered 11 counties, including Horry, Georgetown, Marion and Florence.
  • You own it and live in it as your primary residence.
  • It's a single-family, freestanding home. Duplexes and multifamily units don't qualify.
  • You carry an active homeowners policy.
  • You haven't already received and used an SC Safe Home grant.
  • The work is a retrofit, not a repair. Grants don't pay for general repairs, maintenance or remodeling.

How the Grant Process Works

Applications open about twice a year through an online portal at doi.sc.gov/safehome. The spring 2026 round opened February 10 with about $3 million in funding, much more than a typical round. A certified wind inspector evaluates the home, and funds go fast.

Tax Credits and Premium Discounts

South Carolina also offers a state income tax credit of 25 percent of retrofit costs, up to $1,000, plus a credit of up to $1,500 for sales tax paid on materials.

South Carolina law requires insurers to offer premium discounts for wind-resistant construction like FORTIFIED. Ask your agent what your carrier offers.

When to Build a FORTIFIED Roof: At Replacement

The right time to go FORTIFIED is when your roof is being replaced. The old shingles are already off and the deck is open, so sealing and re-nailing it adds hours, not a second project. Collins Roofing and Repair prices the upgrade on the same estimate as your new roof.

Signs It's Time to Plan a FORTIFIED Replacement

  • Your shingles are near 20 to 25 years old, the typical life of architectural shingles in this climate.
  • You've had wind damage or missing shingles after a recent storm.
  • You live near the beach or in an open, high-wind spot.
  • You plan to stay and want the five-year certificate on file.
  • An SC Safe Home round is opening and you want to apply.

Planning a full roof replacement is the moment to ask about the FORTIFIED upgrade.

Keeping Your FORTIFIED Designation

Your certificate lasts five years. To renew, an evaluator confirms the roof still meets the standard. Solar mounts, new skylights and vent changes can affect it, so ask Collins Roofing and Repair before anyone cuts into the roof.

What a FORTIFIED Roof Costs Near You and How Collins Roofing and Repair Helps You Pay for It

A new architectural shingle roof runs about $7,600-$12,000+ on a 2,000 sq ft roof. IBHS says going FORTIFIED typically adds $1,000-$3,000+ when re-roofing a 2,000 square foot home, plus the evaluator's separate fee. Collins Roofing and Repair prices both on one written estimate.

Typical ranges for a new shingle roof, the FORTIFIED upgrade, the evaluator fee and the SC Safe Home grant
